PRIMARY PURPOSE:

  • To assist in the development and management of the special education program by giving direct leadership in a specific area of study.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:

  • Master’s Degree with Texas certification
  • Deaf Education Certification
  • TASC Certification

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of Federal and State Special Education rules and regulations.
  • General understanding of effective instructional techniques and strategies as they relate to identified disabling conditions.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the MISD policies and procedures.
  • Highly effective organizational and consensus-building skills.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Successful teaching experience in general education or special education.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
 

  • Mediate concerns from parents regarding provisions of special education services, placement, etc.
  • Manage the budget for the Regional Day School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • Plan monthly meetings with RDSPD districts
  • Assist in pupil placement in appropriate special education services and in the arrangement of transportation services.
  • Assist principals, educational diagnosticians, and teachers with the identification, diagnosis, evaluation, and referral of pupils in the coordinator’s specific area of responsibility.
  • Aid in assessing the instructional program and in formulating plans for improvement.
  • Participate in ARD meetings as needed.
  • Assist teachers in the evaluation and selection of instructional methods, materials, and new textbooks.
  • Secure consultant services as authorized.
  • Provide input for revision of various forms, planning, documents, and other innovative processes.
  • Assist teachers in adjusting the curriculum to meet the needs of individual special needs students.
  • Assist with reports to state and federal agencies.
  • Conduct individual conferences, informal discussions and committees.
  • Direct the planning and preparation of resource guides, handbooks, etc.
  • Assist with orientation of new teachers.
  • Assist with plans to initiate and direct professional learning for special education staff.
  • Organize/assist in administering the specific programs required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Paraprofessionals, secretaries, DHH teachers, DHH Diagnosticians, ASL Interpreters, and other personnel as assigned by the Executive Director or Director of Special Education.
  • Programs as assigned by the Executive Director or Director of Special Education.

  • Writing reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Presenting information to administrators and campus staff.

  • Maintaining emotional control under stress and displaying a positive and caring attitude.

  • District travel.
  • Lifting, carrying, and delivering various weights of materials.
  • Meeting deadlines with severe time constraints.
  • Working extended work hours.
